The Challenge: Removing a 24 ft. Supporting Wall
The primary challenge of this project was the removal of a 24 ft. supporting wall that separated the kitchen and den. This wall was a critical structural component, and its removal required careful engineering to ensure the stability and safety of the entire home. Our team had to remove the existing wall studs between the den and kitchen while simultaneously supporting both ceilings with temporary walls. This allowed us to safely remove the old beams and proceed with the installation of new structural elements.
Innovative Engineering Solutions
To achieve a seamless integration between the kitchen and den, we employed advanced engineering techniques. By cutting all the ceiling joists, we were able to install two 26 ft. engineered 2×12 LVL high-tensile beams above the ceiling. These beams provided the necessary support and allowed us to create a unified ceiling level across both rooms. This innovative approach resulted in a smooth, flowing transition between the kitchen and den, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space.
Creating a Modern and Functional Kitchen
With the structural challenges addressed, our focus shifted to designing and installing a modern, stylish, and functional kitchen. We created a new, extended breakfast bar that seats 7-8 people, providing ample space for dining and socializing. The kitchen features all-new J&K white maple cabinets, offering plenty of storage and a clean, contemporary look. The countertops are custom 3cm White Calaccata Supreme quartz, adding a touch of luxury and elegance to the space.
High-Quality Finishes and Fixtures
To complement the new kitchen design, we installed a modern ‘zero radius’ undermount sink with accessories, enhancing both the functionality and appearance of the kitchen. We also added new 4” LED recessed lights and LED undercabinet lights, providing bright, energy-efficient illumination. The hardwood floors were patched and re-stained to match the existing flooring, ensuring a cohesive and polished look throughout the kitchen and den.
Enhancing the Adjacent Spaces
In addition to the kitchen and den, we also made improvements to adjacent areas of the home. A sliding barn door entry and new cabinets were added to the laundry room, enhancing its functionality and style. New patio doors and flooring were installed in the sunroom, creating a bright and inviting space for relaxation and entertaining.
