The Challenge: Bridging the Gap Between Spaces
At Millwood Remodeling & Design, we specialize in turning challenges into triumphs, and one of our most memorable projects involved a 1980s home desperately in need of a modern transformation. The primary issue was the stark disconnect between the home’s main living areas. The original design featured a disjointed layout with varying ceiling heights—a vaulted ceiling in the dining room, an 8 ft flat ceiling in the kitchen, and a 10 ft ceiling in the living room, creating a fragmented and closed-off feel. Furthermore, the master bath was trapped in a bygone era, complete with outdated fixtures and finishes.
Innovative Solutions: Creating Cohesion and Luxury
The first order of business was to eliminate the barriers that compartmentalized the home. Our goal was to create an open, cohesive space that flowed seamlessly from one area to the next. To tackle the ceiling dilemma and unify the space, we removed all dividing walls and installed double LVL support beams with joist hangers. This strategic move allowed us to standardize the ceiling height at 9 ft throughout the kitchen and dining areas, while preserving the 10 ft ceiling in the den, accented with decorative beams for added character.
The kitchen and dining area transformation was particularly dramatic. We jacked out the slab to move drains and plumbing, facilitating the installation of a large, central island that became the heart of the home. This island not only serves as a focal point for social gatherings but also integrates functionality with style.
The flooring overhaul was another significant aspect of this remodel. We replaced the existing floors with solid oak hand-scraped flooring throughout the house, enhancing the warmth and unity of the space.
A Master Bath Reborn
The master bathroom remodel was a highlight of this project. We removed all traces of the dated décor, including wallpaper, vanities, and the semi-sunken tub, and demolished the cramped shower. The spaciousness of the room allowed us to construct a large, luxurious shower with frameless glass and a bench seat, complemented by a modern, freestanding 60″ acrylic tub. The design featured a striking wall of tile behind the tub, with 12×24 tiles laid closely together, creating a sleek, contemporary look. The addition of a massive double vanity with ample storage transformed the bathroom into a stylish, functional space that the homeowners adore.
