Open Floor Plan Remodel in Dallas, TX for Sherri D

The 1980s home suffered from a huge disconnect between its large main living area and its kitchen/dining areas, along with an outdated master bath.

First of all, we had to get rid of those walls and doors! Another major problem was we had a vaulted ceiling in the dining room, an 8 ft flat ceiling in the kitchen, and a 10 ft ceiling in the living room. What a nightmare! To maintain a level 9 ft ceiling in the new large kitchen/dining area, we removed all the dividing walls and installed double LVL support beams with joist hangers (see the construction phase image). We kept the ceiling in the den at 10 feet, which worked because the trim work was framed by decorative beams. In addition, we had to jack out the slab and move the drains and plumbing to the new large island. Last but not least, we replaced all the flooring throughout the house with solid oak hand scraped flooring. Probably our most dramatic and favorite transformation to date.

We updated this 70s special bathroom with a semi-sunken tub as part of the whole-house remodel. We removed all the wallpaper, vanities, and tub and demolished the tiny shower. As the room is quite large, we were able to build a huge new shower with frameless glass and a bench seat. Featuring an exposed faucet and hand spray, this 60″ freestanding acrylic tub is modern and freestanding. Note the giant wall of tile behind the tub. All tile is 12×24 and laid with 1/16” grout lines. There is a flat pebble design on the shower base. Additionally, we installed a massive double vanity with tons of drawers and cabinets for towel storage. It’s probably the biggest mirror we’ve ever installed! This customer is very happy with their stylish master bathroom. Thx, G.
